G.B. Burlotto, Pelaverga, Verduno-Piemonte, Italy 2019
Style: Dry red wine
Grape Varieties: Pelaverga
Appellation: Verduno - Barolo
Bottle Size: 750mL
Giovanni Battista Burlotto (1850-1927), known as “Il Commendatore”, pioneered the sale of Barolo in bottle (in the manner of French château) and made his village of Verduno famous as the supplier to the Royal House of Savoy. Now, with great-great grandson Fabio Alessandria acting as winemaker, the name has re-emerged as one of the great producers in Piemonte along with renewing fame of Verduno. They own 12 hectares of vineyards with south-facing position in white marl soil, highlighted by the great cru Monvigliero. It’s an easy argument to make that Burlotto is responsible for preserving and proliferating this almost lost variety. Delicately textured but deeply layered, it smells and tastes like crushed blackcap raspberries, violets, long pepper and earth.
